The problem

Nassau County has four high schools spread across forty miles, from the beach to the Georgia line. Our two local newspapers publish weekly and neither has a full-time sports reporter. The Jacksonville outlets cover us when a team is winning and forget us when it isn't. Volleyball, cross country, swimming, golf, weightlifting and every JV team get almost nothing.

The result is that a Yulee parent driving home from work has no way to find out how the Hilliard game went, and a West Nassau senior has no record of the season she just played.

All four, equally. A county site that quietly becomes a Fernandina Beach site is just another way of leaving the west side out.

Where the scores come from

Most of them arrive on their own. The live board is a ScoreStream widget, fed by parents, coaches and students posting from the stands with their phones. It is the same service the Jacksonville television stations use for their own scoreboards, which means a score posted in Callahan reaches the whole region, not just this site.

What that system does not do is stats, standout performances, or the sports nobody is posting about. That part takes people. Coaches, team managers, parents and students sending in results, and eventually schedule feeds directly from the athletic departments so games appear before they are played.

When a score is still missing, we say so on the page instead of hiding the gap. An empty row is honest, and it tells you exactly where a volunteer is needed.

How we operate

• Free, always, for everyone.Free to read, free to be on, free for the schools. No subscription, no paywall on a kid's own stat line.
• All four schools, all sports, boys and girls.Football pays the bills of attention. It does not get to take the whole page.
• We honor every directory-information opt-out.If a family has opted out through the district, that student does not appear here.
• One email removes anything.Any parent, athlete or athletic director can write to us and we take a name, photo or statistic down. No form, no explanation needed.
• Money would go to teams, never to a named athlete.If we ever raise funds, they go to school and county funds the athletic directors direct. That keeps eligibility clean.
• We correct in public.Wrong score, misspelled name, wrong number. We fix it and we leave a visible note that it changed.

Where this stands

Nassau Preps is early. Donations are not open, and right now the site has football and not much else, because football is what people are currently reporting. That is the honest state of local sports data in this county and it is exactly the thing we are trying to change.
